Troubleshooting AC & Furnace Problems
Many times problems with your A/C or furnace can be answered quickly. These are the questions that we ask over the phone to help you determine if a technician should come out and look at your system. Dependent upon your unique answer, it may be time to schedule an immediate service.
- When was the last time you changed your filter?
- Have you checked the batteries in your thermostat?
- Have you checked your breaker?
We dispatch as quickly as possible. Getting a technician out to your home can depend upon the season and how many people are ahead of you. To keep your home cool year-round, we recommend scheduling a maintenance visit in the early spring so that we can check your equipment and help detect potential problems. We run specials on these services before the hot summer heat is in full effect.

The lifespan of your HVAC system depends heavily on how well you maintain the system. With proper preventative maintenance performed on a regular basis, you can expect your HVAC system to last around 15-20 years, but this will vary based on the system type. Here are the average lifespans for various HVAC systems:
- Heat Pumps: Average of 11-13 years
- Air Conditioning Units: Average of 11-13 years
- Furnaces: Average of 18-20 years
- Tankless Water Heaters: Average of 20 years
- Electric or Gas Water Heaters: Average of 10 years
- Thermostats: Average of 15 years (However, with the evolution of modern technology, it is recommended to update your thermostat sooner.)
There are three main types of HVAC air filters: 1″ Standard Air Filter, 4″ Media Filter, and Electronic Air Cleaners (EAC). Our recommendations for how often each of these filters should be changed are as follows:
- 1″ Standard Air Filter: Once per month
- 4″ Media Filter: Twice per year – once in the spring and once in the fall.
- Electronic Air Cleaner (EAC): Four times per year – once at the beginning of each season.
There are many options for saving money on your energy bills. Some ways we recommend saving on energy costs are:
- Upgrade your HVAC system to a more efficient unit, if appropriate
- Consider an upgrade to a programmable thermostat that can automatically adjust temperatures throughout the day
- Keep up with your filter change schedule
- Improve air circulation with ceiling fans
- Clear all debris and furniture from vents
- Stick to an annual maintenance schedule, having maintenance completed twice a year – once in the fall and once in the spring.
Don’t let anyone try to sell you an oversized system. While this may seem better on the surface, the truth is that an HVAC system that’s too large will operate in short cycles, causing frequent starting and stopping, which leads to higher energy bills. Additionally, if the system is too small for your home, it will be forced to run continuously to try to heat and cool your home to the desired temperature, also resulting in higher energy bills. To get an appropriately sized HVAC system for your home, you need to consider your home’s square footage. Call the experts from S&S Mechanical for a proper consultation!
HVAC Troubleshooting Tips
1. Check Your Thermostat
Make sure it’s set to HEAT or COOL. Verify the screen is powered on and not blank. If the screen is blank or flashing error codes, check batteries and power supply.
To Replace Batteries:
- Pull the thermostat housing off the wall mount (slide up first if needed)
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to pry out old batteries
- Insert new batteries with + side up (unless marked otherwise)
- Snap housing back onto wall plate, aligning pins with terminal screw block
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- CR2032 3V lithium batteries OR AA/AAA alkaline batteries
Digital wall thermostats are programmed to display a low battery warning one or two months prior to the battery going dead. This gives you enough time to purchase batteries and install them before the old batteries stop working.
Do not install leaking or damaged batteries, as they may corrode and ruin the electronic components of the thermostat.
2. Verify Temperature Settings
Make sure your heat temperature setting is higher than the inside recorded temperature. Ensure the cooling set point is below the inside recorded temperature.
3. Check Power Supply
Confirm there’s power to both your furnace and air conditioner unit. Try resetting the circuit breaker for both systems.
4. Inspect Air Flow
Check if air is coming from your vents. Ensure all grilles are open and unobstructed. Look for furniture blocking vents—couches, beds, hutches, or other items can restrict airflow.
5. Replace Air Filter
Your filter should be changed regularly based on the type and your environment. A clogged filter significantly restricts airflow and reduces system efficiency.
6. Check the Furnace Shut-Off Switch
Look for a light switch-style toggle near or on your furnace. This can accidentally get switched off when moving things around. If it’s in the OFF position, turn it ON and wait a few minutes for the system to fire up.
7. Verify Gas Meter Position
Make sure your gas meter valve is in the “ON” position. The valve handle should be parallel to the pipe when ON.
